Winter Restaurant Week Sneak Peak

There is nothing better than good food except maybe getting to sample good food from 15 local restaurants all at once!

This past week I had a last minute invite from Chris and Lisa at Dayton Local to attend the Miami Valley Restaurant Association's winter restaurant week, sneak peak. You don't have to ask me twice to eat!

The event, hosted by Buckeye Vodka, was a delicious experience. Everything I tasted was well prepared, but a few definite favorites stuck out in my mind.

The pork ossobuco and spinach salad with a warm bacon dressing from Station House got me started and it was the perfect bite for such a nippy, cold evening. And bacon dressing?! Not a salad necessarily for your waste line but for your taste buds, a definite must.

If it were up to me, the star of the show would hands down be the national dish of Brazil, Feijoada, from El Meson. Prepared right in front of us in a large steamy pan, you could tell that a lot of heart and tradition goes into a dish like this.

I've never been to the Hispanic infused, family owned and operated restaurant before but this friendly bunch and their rockin' food has me itching to pop over and visit. 

Each January the family takes a culinary trip to places such as Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. They bring back their culturally enriched experiences to the restaurant and use the foodspiration from markets and local eats in their own dishes. 
Brazil is likely to start getting a lot of attention as they are set to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and what better way to celebrate than for El Meson to bring us a spark of Brazilian flavor right here in Dayton. The mix of different meats, rice, black beans, and collards was the perfect dish and I finished every last bit.

A few other chomps I really enjoyed were the pan-seared trout with butternut squash and wilted spinach at Jay's Seafood...

The non traditional grilled cheese with bacon and a tomato basil soup that I so desperately wanted dive into from Deli at Webster Street...

Aaand, the jerk chicken with a perfect, spicy kick from Agnes' All Natural Grill.

I sent everything down smoothly with a buckeye vodka cocktail and some refreshing fruit smoothies from the Smoothie King and left full and happy. Thanks again Chris and Lisa for having me out!
