Portillo's in Chicago

I feel pretty lucky that my mom's hometown is Chicago. Not directly in the city, my extended Chicago family all live an easy train ride away. While we were there for Christmas my mom, brother, and I made plans to make a quick stop downtown.

If you asked my mom for one word that comes to mind when you say, "Chicago Food" her answer would probably be "Portillo's". She's a longtime fan of a juicy, authentic Chicago hot dog so when the tummy's started rumbling, the choice for lunch was a no brainer.

Inside is a warm and electric, 2 story ode to Chicago. People are bustling around which can be a bit overwhelming, but the friendly and vocal staff have their terrific service down to a science.

We hopped in line and our order was taken right away. Though I am not typically a fan of hot dogs, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have a Chicago dog in Chicago.
And since I was on vacation (let's go with that excuse) I threw some cheese fries and a coke into the mix. Made to perfection, this was hands down the best hot dog I've ever had.
To be a proper Chicago dog it must be a hot dog nestled into a sesame seed bun topped with, yellow mustard, chopped onions, bright green relish, fresh tomatoes, a couple of sport peppers, a dill pickle spear and a dash of celery salt. NO Ketchup allowed!

Mom obviously had the same as I and my brother opted for a burger, onion rings, and a strawberry daiquiri with a kick that did not disappoint!

Full and happy we said our goodbyes to Portillos and made quick stops at Macy's to see the 2 story Christmas tree and Garrett's for some delicious Chicago mix popcorn. Staple items.

If you're in Chicago, please tell me you'll grab a bite to eat at Portillo's. It's the best hot dog joint around!
